Tonight the spectacle of the (full) wolf moon. History and myth

Tonight, Thursday 28 January, the first full moon of 2021 is clearly visible over the skies of Parma and its province, as can also be seen in the images by Paolo Panni. For about three days it will remain clearly visible, to keep us company then until the end of the month. That of January is commonly called the “Full Moon of the Wolf”, a name that recalls how, in the cold and snowy winters, the packs of wolves came closer to the villages, in search of food, and made their howl ring out on moonlit nights full. There are two reasons why this full moon is called “of the wolf”: first of all, as anticipated, because it occurs at that time of year when the food of predators is scarce, and this induced the wolves to approach houses and villages. The second reason is what it also has to do with the family and the spirit of solidarity typical of these animals who live in herds, and who stay with a family for life. They not only depend on the pack for affection, knowledge and moral support, but also to survive. Without a pack, many wolves end up pining and dying. (Paolo Panni)
