Tonight on TV: One of the best action films of all time – but there’s a catch! – Cinema News

“Die Hard,” the action masterpiece that made Bruce Willis a star, is on free TV tonight at 8:15 p.m. However, we advise you not to tune in when it happens. Because you can see an even better version of the classic elsewhere.

If you ask Bruce Willis fans which is the action star’s best film, the overwhelming majority will answer “Die Hard”. Although the actor, who had to end his career in 2022 due to health problems, has a whole series of outstanding to masterful films to offer (“Pulp Fiction”, “12 Monkeys”, “The Sixth Sense”), “Die Hard” is simply the defining masterpiece in the life of the German-born Hollywood star. Especially since he also starred in the FILMSTARTS list of the best action films of all time appears (almost) at the top.

The 1988 cult classic defined Willis’ screen persona and made him one of the most sought-after actors of the 1990s. Today, August 17, 2024, “Die Hard” will be broadcast on VOX at 8:15 p.m. But be careful: This will be the edited version for ages 12 and up.

Although only about a minute is missing compared to the FSK-16 theatrical version (most of the particularly bloody scenes were removed) and “Die Hard” is still a very good action film in this version. But the lack of toughness weakens John McClane’s daring rescue mission a little. Which is why we definitely recommend the uncut version. You can currently enjoy this as part of your flat rate subscription on Disney+* or on (4K) Blu-ray, DVD or via a paid video-on-demand:

This is “Die Hard”

New York police officer John McClane (Willis) wants to spend Christmas with his children, which is why he visits his still-wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) in Los Angeles. But during their company party at Nakatomi Plaza, the skyscraper is taken over by terrorists led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman).

While Gruber and his henchmen take Holly and his colleagues hostage, John manages to escape. Now the combative cop is planning a counterattack: As a one-man army, he wants to take on the villains one by one in order to free his wife and the other hostages…
