Tonight Doel 3 will be permanently shut down, director Peter Moens: “Let’s not improvise with nuclear safety”

These problems aside, Doel 3 was actually a very high performance reactor. After the actual troubles, there were no more significant problems. “Since the nuclear fuel swap and major maintenance last year, we’ve been running non-stop for 365 days straight,” says Moens. “Very few power plants in the world do this.”

“It was a very high performance plant, thanks to the people who ran it,” adds the director. It is clearly with a heavy heart that he says goodbye to Doel 3. “It is a very special moment and it will be accompanied by many emotions,” he says. “I was also a test engineer here before I became director. It will be a tough time after that.”
