Toni Kroos is known for honest words. He also has a clear opinion on transfers to Saudi Arabia. One aspect bothers him in particular.
Madrid – The current transfer summer in football is probably characterized by the Saudi Arabian change offensive. The Saudi Professional League is attracting more and more players with financially lucrative contract offers – not just veterans who are ending their careers there, but also younger players. World champion Toni Kroos has now commented on this development. He sees this as a clear threat to football.

Toni Kroos criticizes move to Saudi Arabia: money as the “only motivation”
In the podcast “Einfach mal Luppen”, which the 2014 world champion moderates together with his brother Felix, Toni Kroos commented on the many moves to Saudi Arabia over the past few months. Above all, he criticized the “26-, 27-, 28-year-olds who have absolutely top quality, play in top clubs in Europe” and who would decide to continue their career in the Gulf state when they were in their best footballing age.
He emphasized that it is only the high salaries offered that are currently attracting footballers to Saudi Arabia. “For a 28-year-old top player who plays for a good club in Europe, that’s the only motivation to go there,” said the multiple Champions League winner.

“Danger for the football of the future”: Kroos regrets transfers to Saudi Arabia
He cannot understand the purely monetary motive at this age: “Such a cut in his sporting career, from his demands, to scale it down just because of money – I’m not a fan of that,” the 33-year-old made clear. “That’s an incredibly bad role model for a lot of young youth players that the motivation is money.”
Kroos, who recently criticized the DFB-Elf, even went one step further in his criticism: “I think it’s a pity for everyone who puts the sporting thoughts at the back at the absolute top football age. That’s just not a good role model for me and a danger for the football of the future.”
“Embarrassing”: Kroos angry about the transfer of youngster Veiga to Saudi Arabia
Shortly after his statement in the podcast, Kroos underlined his regret at the latest developments in the transfer market. Under a post on the Instagram channel by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who announced the upcoming move from Celta Vigo’s 21-year-old youngster Gabriel Veiga to the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, the 33-year-old gave his opinion on the matter. “Embarrassing,” wrote Kroos, who deleted his comment shortly afterwards – but the clear dislike was also evident.
Al-Ahli initially did not confirm Veiga’s commitment. If this does not happen before the upcoming matchday weekend, the paths of the Spaniard and the German will probably cross: Kroos will be a guest in La Liga with Real Madrid at Veiga’s Celta on Friday evening.

Kroos defends Saudi Arabia move from Ronaldo: ‘Have legend status’
In his podcast, however, Kroos protected his former Madrid team-mates Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, who both now also play in Saudi Arabia. Their changes when they were older footballers are understandable, after all they “won everything, have legendary status, achieved everything and then let their careers run out there if I don’t mind,” said the former German international.
But Benzema may not have ended up there just because of the money. As for several other stars, Islam also played an important role in his transfer to Saudi Arabia. (wuc)
