Tonga reports first COVID case


The virus was detected in a fully vaccinated passenger flying from New Zealand.

Authorities in the island state of Tonga in western Polynesia have reported their first case of coronavirus. The infection was detected in a passenger arriving from New Zealand. Reported by the local edition Matangi Tonga.

Prime Minister of Tonga Pogiva Tuionetoa on Friday, October 29, announced that the infected passenger had been quarantined. The patient was vaccinated with Pfizer.

All employees of Foaamot International Airport, medical staff, police officers on duty at the time of the arrival of the aircraft, were sent to self-isolation. Passengers on the plane were also isolated, including seasonal workers and members of the Tonga Olympic team.

Tonga, located northeast of New Zealand, has about 106,000 inhabitants. About 31% of the kingdom’s residents were fully vaccinated, and 48% received a single dose.
