Tomorrow is the Peak of the Orinoid Meteor Shower

The Orinoid meteor shower occurs every October.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Orionid meteor shower is predicted to reach its peak on Thursday (21/10). According to the social media page of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (LAPAN), the Orinoid meteor shower has been active since October 2 and peaked on October 21 at 18.00 WIB.

Reported from Cnet, at its peak, it is estimated that 20 or more meteors will be a stunning sight in the dark night sky. Unfortunately, this meteor shower coincides with the full moon, so the light from the full moon may slightly obscure the view of the meteor shower.

The Orionids meteor shower occurs every October when Earth drifts through a cloud of cosmic debris and detritus left by Comet Halley. Halley’s Comet travels through the solar system every 76 years.

Even if the full moon sweeps away most of the Orionids this year, these meteors travel at a very fast speed, at roughly 147,000 miles per hour (66 kilometers per second), which means they leave a longer and more persistent trail that could make them easier to see. There is also always the possibility of a fizzing space rock breaking apart and exploding in the flames as a bright fireball or a cluster of fireballs.
