Tommy Paul, along with Taylor Fritz, is one of the players who could “retire” Andy Murray. They will face each other in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the Briton will partner Dan Evans and has already announced that it will be the last tournament he plays in his career as a professional tennis player.
The Brits are coming in after two epic rounds where they had to save match points in both matches, against Japanese Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori and Belgians Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen. The Americans are in the quarterfinals after having defeated Canadians Milos Raonic and Felix Auger-Aliassime and Dutchmen Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer.
Paul would like to see Murray on tour after his retirement
The world number 13 admitted that he would like to be the one to retire Murray at the Olympics. However, their competitive rivalry aside, Paul had nothing but praise for the three-time Grand Slam champion. Furthermore, the American shared his desire to see Murray appear at different ATP events after his retirement, in a similar way to Federer. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has made sporadic appearances at ATP and Grand Slam events since hanging up his racket in 2022.
“It’s been an awesome run, hopefully it comes to an end for them, but it’s been fun to watch, for sure,” Paul said of Murray and Evans’ Olympic performance. “Hopefully we’ll retire him. He’s one of the best guys in the locker room and a great guy in general and obviously an amazing player and he’s had an amazing career.
“Win or lose it’s going to be sad for me not to see him on tour anymore. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of him in the British summer, hopefully he’ll be travelling around like Roger. Roger is still everywhere.”
