/ world today news/ “Before we talk about the fate of the Russian reactors intended for the Belene NPP, Bulgaria must pay for itself,” commented Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev in the BTV studio on Saturday (September 10).
According to him, the interest on the amount awarded by the international arbitration is 10 million euros per month.
“The companies themselves in the energy sector cannot withdraw the money”, Donchev admitted and pointed out that in the coming months it will be necessary to decide how the state will provide them with 600 million euros, one of the options being a loan. Negotiations have begun with the Russian side on the debt repayment scheme.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the scenario for the use of the reactors must have a clear economic logic, and the specific actions of our country must come after an analysis.
“We have a bad national habit, especially when talking about projects in the energy sector – we invest money, driven by the eager enthusiasm to build and build without clarity of what will happen,” noted Donchev.
He expressed the opinion that an option with privatization of the equipment and site of the Belene NPP must be tried, and a completely private project should appear there.
The Deputy Prime Minister did not go into specifics, but noted that there are already 2-3 potential investors.
