Neukirchen-Vluyn. Chase is a celebrity in Neukirchen-Vluyn. Now he has visited Edeka. How the employees reacted and what its owner says about the hype.
Whether in the senior park “carpe diem”, in daycare centers or schools, Tomcat Chase has now become an integral part of the villagescape of a district of Neukirchen-Vluyn. Now he has discovered Edeka Raber in the center of Neukirchen as a destination for extensive forays. The reactions to this are different.
On the first weekend in October, Chase paid his first visit to the supermarket branch on Mozartstrasse and the “Büsch” bakery branch in the same building. The problem on Sunday: Only the bakery was open, Edeka remained closed. Because the two stores are connected, Chase could have wandered the supermarket aisles, but the bakery team wouldn’t have been able to catch him and let him out. “We didn’t want the cat to come in so that it wouldn’t be locked up there,” explains Christina Schimanski, an employee at “Büsch”. Therefore, customers were asked to keep the doors closed to prevent Chase from entering the store. A post was also made on Facebook asking about the owners.

Owner Sarina Gamsiz can understand the excitement surrounding her cat’s visit to the supermarket. “I understand that it’s not that cool,” said the 32-year-old, “but he’s just a free-roamer and Edeka is right up the street from us.”
Since the beginning of January this year, Chase has been living with his brother Rider with the Gamsiz family in Neukirchen-Vluyn. The former street cats from Greece are fully vaccinated, chipped and registered, assures Gamsiz. Registration makes it possible to trace the owners of lost animals. In the case of Chase, this is no longer necessary at the Moers animal shelter. “They already know him at the animal shelter,” admits Gamsiz. The owner is not worried that the cat sometimes stays away for days and nights. “He actually keeps coming back.”
A tomcat from Neukirchen-Vluyn grows into a Facebook star
Chase is largely welcomed and looked after with enthusiasm by the Neukirchen village community. The stray has now become a real social media star. In the Facebook group “Chase, the crazy cat from Neukirchen,” which was recently founded by Kristina Welz, a friend of the owner, the people of Neukirchen regularly post photos and locations of the friendly cat, who is not afraid of dogs or cars. “This hangover is simply the crowning glory,” says Sarina Gamsiz happily.

What many people don’t know: Chase is chronically ill. A veterinarian diagnosed that the cat from Greece had chronic cat cold and a deviated nasal septum, which caused his eyes to water regularly. However, concerns about coming into contact with a sick animal initially prompted some people to send Chase to the animal shelter. However, according to the vet, he is not contagious. If you still don’t want to have the tomcat in your house, shop or garden, the owner gives you the following tip: “Simply scare him away so that he doesn’t feel comfortable.”

At Edeka Raber, the visit of the town’s well-known stray is treated with calm, even though animals are not allowed into grocery stores due to legal hygiene regulations. They were able to quickly catch Chase in the fruit and vegetable department, reports market manager Tobias Skiba. “Because he is so trusting, an employee simply carried him out,” says Skiba. The employees of the supermarket branch can now join the ranks of those chosen by Chase. “We actually thought it was really cool that he paid us a visit,” admits the store manager.
