Tomas Soucek, the 28-year-old midfielder, has signed a new contract with West Ham United, extending his stay at the London club. Soucek joined West Ham on loan from Slavia Prague in January 2020 and made a permanent move in the summer, signing a four-year contract. The club paid a total of 521 million Czech koruna for Soucek, making him the most expensive player to ever transfer from the Czech league to a foreign club.
Last season, Soucek, along with defender Vladimir Coufal, helped West Ham win the UEFA Europa Conference League after defeating Fiorentina in the final at Prague’s Eden Arena. Soucek’s impressive performances have earned him a new contract with the club.
In the opening match of the new Premier League season, Soucek contributed an assist to help West Ham secure a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Reflecting on the match, Soucek expressed his readiness to play a crucial role in the upcoming season, stating, “I feel fresh because last season we played a lot of matches, and now we had a few weeks off and the preparation wasn’t as long. I am prepared and I want to play an important role in the new Premier League season.”
During the match against Bournemouth, Soucek hit the post early on and provided the assist for Jarrod Bowen’s opening goal in the 51st minute. However, West Ham couldn’t hold onto their lead, and Soucek expressed disappointment with the draw, saying, “We wanted to win here. We are disappointed with the draw because we wanted to be as high as possible. In the first half, I could have scored twice, hitting the post and having a chance from a corner.”
Since joining West Ham, Soucek has played 156 competitive matches and scored 22 goals. His performances have made him a key player for the club, and the new contract reflects the club’s faith in his abilities.
