Tomás Ramírez, the lawyer of the Legal Defense Office of the U. de Chile who assumes the defense of Rojas Vade

Lawyer Tomás Ramírez Hermosilla was a key piece in the role played by the Legal Defender of the University of Chile after the social outbreak.

Located just a few steps from the epicenter of the demonstrations that were taking place in Plaza Baquedano, after October 18, the entity became a bridge for complaints of harassment during the protests between the victims and the Public Ministry. So much so that on October 23, 2019, when a young student denounced the alleged existence of a torture center at the Metro station in that area, the professional acted as spokesman for said accusation, which was later dismissed by the prosecution.

During the remaining months, he was active in presenting appeals against the Carabineros and the government for the use of pellets and dissuasive elements, such as tear gas, against the so-called “health brigades” that attended to the injured protesters in the sector of Baquedano. His leading role in these instances did not go unnoticed by a family fact. And is that While Ramírez denounced torture and human rights violations, his uncle, the renowned criminal lawyer Luis Hermosilla, served as an advisor at La Moneda, particularly the Minister of the Interior, Andrés Chadwick, with whom he has a close relationship of friendship, an authority who ended up resigning from his post a month after the outbreak and constitutionally accused at the end of that same year.

Today, the name of Tomás Ramírez, a lawyer graduated from the Casa de Bello with maximum distinction, comes to light again. And it is that 48 hours after the North Central Prosecutor’s Office began a criminal investigation against the constituent Rodrigo Rojas Vade -for allegedly missing the truth in his declaration of interests-, the member of the Legal Defense Office of the University of Chile contacted the prosecutor’s office and the PDI on behalf of the member of the Constitutional Convention who a few days ago admitted not having cancer later that a report from La Tercera Domingo revealed it.

The professional worked between 2009 and 2011 as an advisor in the same division of the Public Ministry and, according to sources in the case, he would have assured the prosecutor Patricio Cooper that the intention of his client is testify and thus waive your right to remain silent. Of course, he would have said that he would be contacted by email.

Today the constitutional presented a license for 15 days. So that Cooper’s order was that the Santiago Criminal Investigation Brigade team coordinate with Ramírez for the interrogation, with the understanding that for health reasons, then, this will take place in two more weeks.

The three members of the Bicrim Santiago team who are in the footsteps of Rojas Vade have already completed a series of procedures and are going for more. This Wednesday they took a statement from the president of the Constitutional Convention, Elisa Loncón, and the vice president, Jaime Bassa. Both as witnesses and with the understanding that they were the ones who signed the official document that allowed to open this criminal investigation, pointing out that there could be facts constituting a crime in the statement presented by the constituent, in which he claimed to have a debt with the financial system of $ 27 million for cancer chemotherapy treatment.

In the PDI chore log is also interviewing six vice-presidents of the Convention, officiate to the Electoral Service (Servel) to send all the information presented by Rojas, and the People’s List, to validate his candidacy for the instance.

Today in the afternoon a team of policemen, however, will go to the two addresses that the constituent maintains in force, in Santiago and Pomaire, to formally notify it of its judicial situation.

What is not clear to the investigators is whether the lawyer Ramírez will act in the case as a private defender or will act for the Legal Defender of the University of Chile, which – until now – only had representation in victims of constraints and violations of the human rights. This medium tried to contact Ramírez, without obtaining any response.
