Tomáš Macháč: Rising Star of Czech Men’s Tennis and Unstoppable Winning Streak

His breakthrough was expected much earlier, Tomáš Macháč struggled and worked hard for him. But now the twenty-two-year-old Czech is experiencing the best weeks of his career and confirming his exceptional talent. He’s racking up win after win, with his second straight title in his pocket and the certainty of his highest ranking yet.

Czech men’s tennis is experiencing one joy after another. After this year’s breakthrough of Jiří Lehečka to the top of the world, the impressive rise of the young super talent Jakub Menšík and the flawless performance of the national team in the Davis Cup, here is another success that clearly symbolizes the end of the dark ages.

Tomáš Macháč is finally fully selling what he can do. Adds consistency to talent. He is getting rid of the fluctuations that have brought him down for a long time.

“Actually, I don’t understand why he hasn’t been firmly in the top 100 for a long time. Every time he plays big matches, he shows extremely high-quality and attractive tennis. He has a huge talent. It’s a mystery to me. He is not yet able to repeat it in the smaller tournaments, which is a terrible shame,” Jiří Novák, the former best Czech tennis player, said two weeks ago.

In an interview for Aktuálně.cz. he advised not to panic and expected that Macháč’s rise would come after all. He had no idea how quickly it would happen.

The tennis player from Beroun immediately followed up on a great performance from the Davis Cup and won two French challengers in two weeks in a row, in Orleans and now in Mouilleron-Le-Captif.

His winning streak now stands at twelve games. Since the beginning of September, he has started seventeen duels and lost only one.

First, he finally returned to the top 100 in the ranking, now he will probably climb to the top ten.

This is a key shift that will ensure Macháč’s more frequent participation in major ATP tournaments, where points are added much faster and are a stepping stone to the higher levels of world tennis.

“He is simply unstoppable,” the official ATP account wrote about the Czech tennis player, adding another of the many attractive shots that Macháč regularly delivers.

“He has reflexes like a cat,” was the comment addressed to the player who has thrilled the tennis world at the biggest events several times in recent months.

In January, in the first round of the Australian Open, he tormented the world number three, Nor Casper Ruud, until one in the morning. He brought the crowd to ecstasy many times at the Margaret Court Stadium, and Grand Slam organizers wrote on social media after his four-set defeat: “This was tennis rock’n’roll.”

He delivered another show at the end of February in Dubai, where he came close to knocking out Novak Djokovic in a huge battle. He lost in the third set tie-break.

“Unbelievable match, Macháč played like he was out of his senses,” praised Czech Serbian tennis journalist Saša Ozmo at the time. Djokovic applauded his opponent during and after the match.

“Tomáš definitely didn’t play like the 130th player in the world. He played great tennis and deserves a huge round of applause for that. He gave me all kinds of problems,” admitted the twenty-four-time Grand Slam winner today.

In July, at the Wimbledon premiere, he entertained the audience on London’s second largest court. Even his opponent, home star Cameron Norrie, had to applaud him.

“He served well and some of his volleys were unbelievable. He enjoyed it a lot. I had to adapt to his game, but when I did, he played even more incredible things,” the native of Johannesburg, South Africa shook his head.

Now the stars of world tennis will hopefully meet the Czech magician more often. Macháč stepped among the elite within a month.
