Family man from Jyväskylä Tomas Saturday took an unexpected turn when he returned home from Alko.
– As usual, we went to pick up a couple of bottles of wine, just basic bottles. We came home and put the bottles on the island. I started cooking when I suddenly heard a bang behind my back, says Tomas.
– The bottle of red wine had spread all over the kitchen counter. It made quite a mess and the cupboard doors are still quite red. I hope the color goes away, he continues.

According to Tomas, there were no obvious external reasons for the bottle exploding, and it had not been bumped anywhere on the way home. It was a 15-16 euro bottle of red wine that had been bought at Seppälä Alko in Jyväskylä.
– There was nothing nearby, nothing hit it.
In a surprising situation, the family’s small children also had their own worries.
– It was quite a mess. Fortunately, they didn’t have time to get into broken glass and wine.
Tomas says that a complaint has been made about the product with pictures to Alko. The carpet goes in the wash and the cabinet doors have to be cleaned in another way.
– The red wine was supposed to be good, but it didn’t work out. Or well, you have to buy another bottle if you dare.
Alko answers
Head of Quality Control Juha Viikari tells Iltalehti via email that Alko’s customer service received a complaint about the incident on October 5.
– We are sorry for the situation. The investigation of the case continues by requesting the delivery of the bottle pieces to our store, from where they will be sent to our quality control for further investigation, Viikari says.
According to Viikari, broken wine has entered Alko’s selection at the beginning of 2024. Based on the information collected, it seems that it is a case of breakage caused by a manufacturing error of a single bottle.
– We have not previously received similar feedback from our customers or stores about the product in question.
According to Viikari, a weak point may arise in the glass bottle during production, or a “voltage” may develop in the glass material, which can break the bottle by itself.
– However, based on the picture we received, this shattering did not happen so to speak like an explosion, although fragments are created from the disintegration, says Viikari.
According to Viikari, such a bottle typically breaks during the production or transportation of the product. Sometimes it happens that the wrong bottle reaches the consumer and breaks, for example, due to a change in temperature.
– We are not able to say more about the case in question, because we are waiting for the customer to send the fragments of the bottle for our quality control investigations.
The glass bottle can break on its own
According to Viikari, it is extremely rare for non-pressurized bottles to break completely by themselves.
Typically, such bottles also break even before they arrive in stores.
– We are very sorry for the product breaking and the inconvenience and inconvenience caused to the customer. We take the case seriously and that is why we have asked the customer to deliver the glass shards to our store for examination, from where the shards will be sent to our quality control for examination, says Viikari.
Based on the shards, you can find out if, for example, the glass of the bottle was thinner than usual at some point or if other manufacturing defects can be seen in the bottle.
Alko has also been in contact with the importer about the case.
