Here is the bombshell breaking in the world of women’s handball:
According to Sportbladet’s information, Tomas Axnér takes over the Danish major team Esbjerg.
Whether he continues as national team captain remains to be seen.
Team Esbjerg has belonged to the top of the world’s best league in recent years.
They became Danish champions in 2019 and 2020, were in the final last year and are now in the semi-finals, which begin this weekend. In both 2021 and 2022, they won the Danish Cup.
At the beginning of June, the team, including several Norwegian superstars such as Henny Reistad and Nora Mörk, will play in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second year in a row and are clear favorites against the Hungarian team FTC. Last year they went out in the semis against another Hungarian team – Györ.
Recently extended as the national team captain
It has been clear since last winter that the team’s coach since 2017, Jesper Jensen, is leaving after the season to focus on the task as Danish national team captain. Jensen has had dual assignments since 2020.
Now Sportbladet can reveal that he will be replaced by a Swede. According to our sources, national team captain Tomas Axnér will take over Esbjerg next season. It should be a “done deal” now.
Whether Axnér continues as the national team captain does not tell our information. But Axnér extended his contract as national team captain until 2026 as recently as the end of March, and Esbjerg has thus allowed Jensen to work double duty for three years. On the other hand, the Swedish confederation has been clear that it wants the confederation captains for the women’s and men’s national teams to be full-time employees.
Sweden also plays the World Cup at home in December.
Esbjerg will be the first club team on the women’s side that the 53-year-old Lunda native will coach. He came from the men’s side when he became national team captain in 2020.
Sportbladet has sought Axnér late this evening for a comment, so far in vain.
