TV Television maker Tom Waes (55) knows what to do in the coming months, because he has no fewer than three new programs on the agenda for next year. What can we expect from this? Tom already lifts the tip of the veil at MNM.
“I feel like I’m doing a lot,” Waes tells Julie Van den Steen on MNM. He will release three programs in 2024. First of all, there is the new season of ‘Kamp Waes’, in which ordinary citizens undertake the difficult tests of the special forces together with Tom. The second season will also be available in the Netherlands.
Waes’ two other projects are a lot more mysterious. He is working on a program that will provisionally have the working title ‘Kalm Waes’. What is certain is that that series will also be broadcast in Belgium and the Netherlands. But what exactly does it mean? “Are you going to sit on a yoga mat somewhere and be super calm?” Julie wonders. “That could be possible,” says Tom.

He already shares an anecdote from the series. “The University of Ghent monitored my phone use for three months for the program. How long it takes me, when and why I’m on my phone. I always say that I need my mobile phone for work, but that’s actually bullshit,” he said. The results were burgeoning, he says. “I always start with something practical – the GPS or a banking app – but then follow that with twenty minutes on Instagram, fifteen minutes on Facebook…”
And then there’s that fiction series. It is not a new season of ‘Undercover’, because that series is “definitely done,” he says. It is a completely new story. “It is about a father who is confronted with his daughter and is at a difficult point in his life,” Tom reveals. “It is also recognizable for me, because I have a daughter myself (Isah (27), ed.) . It’s a bit of a search, isn’t it? Sometimes things go very well, other times badly. That’s something we’re going to play with.”
