Tom Van Grieken (34) got the wind from the front and the back last week. In a poll by VRT and De Standaard, Vlaams Belang made progress again and the party is the largest in Flanders with 24.7 percent. But when the far-right soldier Jürgen Conings stole weapons to kill virologist Marc Van Ranst and placed a booby trap to injure law enforcement officers fatally or otherwise, Vlaams Belang was criticized for being a breeding ground for that kind of terror. “How many times do I have to repeat that we disapprove of any form of violence?” sighs Van Grieken. But the Vlaams Belang councilor who calls Jürgen Conings ‘the ultimate resistance fighter’ will not receive a sanction.
