Tom Selleck: From Basketball Dreams to Hollywood Stardom

Tom Selleck has had a long and distinguished career in show business. The star of Magnum, P. I et Blue Bloods is still passionate about her work – the next season of the hit drama series will air soon.

Selleck has played many demanding roles over the years. But the 77-year-old is used to performing his own stunts – a point that unfortunately came back to him in the face.

Tom Selleck wasn’t sure he wanted to be an actor when he was young. Born on January 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan, his family settled in California, where he grew up in the San Fernando Valley.

Tom Selleck – early life

Selleck dreamed of enrolling at the University of Southern California (USC), but his family could not afford the tuition.

In 1962, he graduated from Grant High School. After enrolling at Los Angeles Valley College, he decides to live with his parents to save money.

In his early days, it seemed more likely that Tom would pursue a career in athletics rather than acting. He was a promising basketball player and dreamed of turning professional. One can therefore only imagine his joy after obtaining a basketball scholarship at the University of Southern California.

“I never did plays in school. It didn’t interest me,” Tom told l’AARP in 2015.

But playing basketball at a high college level was easier said than done. As reported KSL, he scored just four points in seven games for the USC Trojans during the 1965–66 season. The following year, he scored zero points in three games.

An excerpt from the USC school guide indicates that Tom was an “agile, fast player who adds depth to the front line. This business administration student is a good jumper with great mobility. He is improving rapidly and has impressed coaches with his drive in training. He has to work on the defense”.

But at the end of the day, Tom just can’t compete with his taller teammates.

“I was pretty good, but not good enough,” recalls Selleck.

Tom Selleck – early acting career

Deep down, Selleck understands that basketball is unlikely to be his future career. However, he had a back-up plan and took a side job to help pay his school fees. The aspiring student first landed a few contracts in TV commercials and appeared on the show The Dating Game.

Looking back, it’s not the moment he’s proudest of, but it will affect his future more than he ever imagined.

“It was humiliating and embarrassing,” he recalled of the dating show. ” I lost. I lost twice. I wasn’t particularly funny or flippant.”

Shortly thereafter, however, Selleck was offered a spot on 20th Century Fox’s talent program. He began to develop his skills, but after two years he took time off to do six months of active duty.

Upon his return, Selleck is no longer retained. But instead of giving up, he is convinced that he will succeed as an actor.

In the early 1970s, he landed small roles in many television series. Then, as he neared his thirties, Selleck starred in six television pilots. Despite this, he failed to break through.

According to Tom himself, this is the reason many thought he became an overnight success when he landed the role of Thomas Magnum giving Magnum, PI

A breakthrough in the “Magnum P. I” case

In reality, he struggled and fought desperately.

“The luckiest thing that happened to me was that I didn’t find a real job until I was 35,” has explained Selleck.

“At 25, I looked like 35, but I was 15. There are a lot of really good actors who succeed as young debuts but don’t graduate – because the public does not accept them as adults.

Magnum, PI has become a huge hit. The detective television series aired between 1980 and 1988 and brought Tom instant stardom. He was nominated five years in a row for the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, which he finally won in 1984.

For more than ten years, Tom Selleck struggled to break through as an actor, and he was about to give up.

” I think that if Magnum hadn’t worked, I would never have worked in this profession again”, he admits.

Thanks to Magnum, Tom became cult and his career has never ceased to be an incredible success story. He has also acted in films such as three men and a baby et In & Out. He was also introduced to a new generation of fans when he played Richard Burke, Monica Geller’s older boyfriend, from season 2 of the hit comedy series. Friends.

In 2010, Selleck landed the role of Frank Reagan in the drama series Blue Bloods, which opened an exciting new chapter for the actor. The series has just been renewed for a 13th season, which will debut this fall.

Tom Selleck and his back pain

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Selleck has a net worth of around $45 million.

In many films and series, the actors have their own stuntman. It is often dangerous work, but for a small number of them, leaving their stunts to someone else is simply out of the question.

In the past, Selleck has done most of his stunts himself, but that has come at a cost. He says his body isn’t what it used to be.

“My back is a bit damaged,” Selleck said.

“When you do stunts in movies – I do a lot of them – you take a risk, but you also sit still a lot. So you can do a fight scene and then sit in your chair, and it’s not like you have a personal trainer saying, “Okay, we’re ready to go, but Tom needs ten minutes of ‘stretching and warming up’.

“And I think the price, he adds, I see it with my peers, I talk to them sometimes. You see the price of all these stunts. They weren’t that hard, but I think it’s the stopping and coming back of all those things.”

Selleck once revealed that he doesn’t like going to the gym, although he tries to stay in shape by working out at the family ranch in Ventura, California.

“I have a 63-acre ranch, and I don’t do all the work, but a lot of it. I brush, I plant trees. We have a hundred old oak trees that I planted. I probably planted a thousand trees myself.

Tom Selleck: wife, marriage, child

It goes without saying that Tom’s career is worthy of admiration. But another thing to celebrate is his loyalty to his wife, Jillie Mack. While many celebrity marriages come and go, the couple have been happy for 35 years.

In an interview with Closer Weekly, Selleck recalled the first time he met Jillie Mack at a performance of the musical Cats, in which Mack starred. It was in the 1980s, after Selleck’s decade-long marriage to model Jacqueline Ray ended.

Although Selleck says he’s not as soft on women as his on-screen counterparts, he did approach his future wife backstage, despite it being her who made the first move.

“She had to go on stage. I hesitated and she finally asked, “Would you like a cocktail?” » »remember Selleck.

The date apparently went well, and Selleck and Mack married in 1987 in a private ceremony. A year after their marriage, their daughter Hannah was born.

Since then, Selleck has put his family before fame and has worked hard to keep his private life out of the Hollywood spotlight.

“I left Magnum to start a family”

In fact, he even put his acting career on the back burner to make sure he had enough time to spend with his beloved wife and daughter.

” I left Magnum to start a family,” Tom Selleck told People in 2012.

“It took me a long time to get off the train, but I really try to have a balance, and this ranch has helped me achieve that. »

“We both thought it was the best environment for Hannah to grow up in,” added Jillie Mack.

Tom, a great lover of nature and the outdoors, wanted to share his passion with his daughter. He was quick to pass it on to her!

Tom and his wife Jillie live on a 65-acre ranch in Ventura, and that’s where Hannah was raised. Both father and daughter share a passion for horses; later they took up horse breeding. Hannah then took up professional riding, and she did well.

Over the years she has qualified for several Grand Prix level competitions and won several medals.

Hannah Selleck finished in the top five in St. Moritz, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix at the 2015 Longines Masters of Los Angeles.

His passion for horses

Sadly, Selleck broke her tibia and fibula in an incident in 2018. She was told she might not even be able to run again, but luckily she wasn’t.

She later turned her passion for horses into a successful breeding and training business, Descanso Farm. Hopefully she and her dad Tom can maintain their passion for horses for many years to come.

Tom Selleck will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we wish him and his family good health and prosperity for many years to come,
