[OSEN=고성환 기자] Can he become the next Christian Eriksen (31, Manchester United)? Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer, 29, is recovering after collapsing due to a heart problem during the game.
Lockyer started in the 2023-2024 Premier League round 17 match against Bournemouth held at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, England, on the 17th (Korean time).
13 minutes into the second half, when both teams were tied 1-1. The game suddenly stopped when Lockyer fell. He suddenly fell near the center line without any significant impact and was unable to get up. The referee quickly confirmed this and blew the whistle, and the medical staff came running.
Lockyer left the field on a stretcher wearing a ventilator, and the game was completely halted about 30 minutes later. Luton fans showed their support by singing the Lockyer cheer song, and Bournemouth fans also cheered with applause. Luton manager Rob Edwards walked around the stadium with tears in his eyes and applauded. He was thanking the audience for their concern.
Fortunately, Lockyer quickly regained consciousness. Luton said on social media: “Our captain suffered a heart attack on the pitch, but was confirmed to have reacted physically when he was taken off on the stretcher. He received further treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital. He is in stable condition. “We found him, and he is currently with his family, awaiting further testing.”
The problem is that this is not the first time Lockyer has collapsed due to heart problems on the field. Last May, he lost consciousness due to arrhythmia in the English Championship (second division) play-off final against Coventry.
Lockyer, who was also a starter at the time, fell to the floor eight minutes into the game and had to receive treatment. Although he woke up quickly, he was taken straight to hospital and watched his teammates’ dramatic penalty shootout victory from his bed. Doctors diagnosed Lockyer with atrial fibrillation, a type of cardiac arrhythmia.
Lockyer said about a month later that he had no memory of hitting the ground, but said, “As soon as I got back, I felt fine. I didn’t really feel in danger and it wasn’t as bad as it looked. I had surgery and this should never happen again.” “I’m done with everything. Now I want to move on,” he said.
But Lockyer collapsed again about seven months later, this time due to heart problems. ‘The Athletic’ said, “Lockyer will undergo further tests over the next few days,” and added, “Real relief will have to wait until he receives a clean bill of health.”
It is a situation where one must seriously consider whether he or she can continue his career as a player in the future. If you are not careful, it can cause problems in your life.
The Athletic said, “Heart problems are not uncommon in sports. According to a study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, athletes are more than twice as likely to experience irregular heartbeats as the general population. Nevertheless, considering past cases, “The sight of a soccer player collapsing during a game will always raise awareness,” he emphasized.
In fact, there are even cases of deaths due to heart problems. In 2003, Cameroon national team member Marc-Vivien Foe died of cardiac arrest during a match, and in 2017, Newcastle player Sheikh Tiote died suddenly during training. Patrice Muamba, who played for Bolton, and Shin Young-rok, who played for Suwon Samsung and Jeju United, also experienced the pain of retiring after suffering cardiac arrest during a game.
Of course, there are players who have overcome heart problems and returned to the pitch. It’s Eriksen. The Danish national team midfielder fell unconscious during a match against Finland at Euro 2020. Fortunately, he came back with a defibrillator and made a big impression, and is still playing for Manchester United.
However, since Lockyer has already suffered from heart problems twice, it is unclear whether he will be able to make a miraculous comeback like Eriksen. The Athletic said, “It is too early to draw specific conclusions about this cardiac arrest incident, let alone its connection to what happened last May,” but added, “Now we will naturally think about Lockyer’s career. He has performed well in the Premier League as well. “But this is secondary. Lockyer’s health is the most important. Additional medical assessments will provide guidance,” he added.
