Tom Holland, the well-known actor of Spider-Man, made a statement that surprised many fans of the beloved actor. In the latest interview, he revealed that next year’s plan is to take a break from acting. The decision comes after the grueling production and starring role in his latest Apple TV+ crime thriller series, The Crowded Room.

Holland admitted in an interview with “Extra” that the filming time of his latest series “The Crowded Room” could be described as hard. The thriller stars Holland as Danny Sullivan (he’s actually Billy Milligan), who the world knows as a campus rapist. A forensic psychological examination revealed that Billy was inhabited by 24 personalities of varying gender, age, nationality, character and intelligence. And for that very reason, he was the first individual to be found not guilty on the basis of dissociative identity disorder.
“It was a tough time filming,” Holland told “Extra” about making the series. “We were exploring certain emotions of this particular person that I had never experienced before. And on top of that, I was also a producer – dealing with the day-to-day issues that came with the film project. And that added tension!”
Holland said that he even enjoyed the experience as he became a full-time producer, but juggling two responsibilities on the same project, playing a character with a severe mental health condition and being a producer, caused him to reach his breaking point as an actor.
“I’m no stranger to hard work,” Holland said. “I’ve lived by the belief that hard work is good work. But this film work broke me. And what is the result of all this? I’m going to take a year off from acting. And I hope that our hard work was not in vain.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, Holland revealed that working on the series actually led to his personal breakdown.
“I started to see that character in my personal life,” Holland said. “I remember being depressed at home and starting to think, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head.’ Yes, I have to shave my head because I have to get rid of this image.”
It turns out the Apple TV+ series changed his views on mental health. “I learned a lot about mental health and the power of it, and I talked to several psychotherapists about Billy’s struggles. And it was very informative for my own life,” the actor said.
Thanks to his friends, family, castmates and psychologist, Holland says he feels supported throughout the process. He even reveals that this experience has changed him for the better and now he feels grown up.
