NOS Sport presenter Tom Egbers cannot be seen on television this weekend. He was discredited by an article in de Volkskrant about abuses in the sports editors. Egbers is the regular face of the Sunday evening broadcast of NOS Studio Sport Eredivisie.

By not appearing on television, Egbers “wants to offer rest to the editors and the program because of the commotion that arose after the article in de Volkskrant”, NOS said in a statement.

A spokesperson does not want to give any further explanation and cannot say whether the presenter can be seen next weekend. Egbers will be replaced by Gert van ‘t Hof tomorrow evening.

Affair

In the article of de Volkskrant tells a woman who started as an intern about an affair she had with Egbers. After his wife found out, Egbers allegedly bullied and intimidated the employee for a while. The woman went to the editor-in-chief, but was not heard. She no longer works for the sports editor.

De Volkskrant spoke to 32 employees and former employees in recent months. This paints a picture of an unsafe working climate at the sports editors.

The NOS management said in a response that it was ashamed of the experiences described and that it would talk to everyone mentioned in the article. An apology was also offered.

New leadership

Those apologies also came on Thursday, following an inventory by an external confidential adviser of reports of cross-border behavior at the editorial office. The report discusses bullying, (sexual) intimidation, discrimination, verbal aggression and integrity issues. Almost a hundred internal and external (former) employees made a report.

NOS announced on Thursday that the four-member editor-in-chief of NOS Sport will eventually step down to make room for “new leadership”.

The management had a meeting with the editor-in-chief today, but it is not clear what the outcome was.
