Both celebrities raised rumors of a romance when they were seen together enjoying Formula 1 in Miami last May.
Having failed, Tom now appears to be trying to win the heart of Sofia Vergara, who announced her divorce from Joe Manganiello this summer after 8 years of marriage.
As reported by the magazine Heat, Tom Cruise is on a new mission trying to romance the Modern Family star for the second time; the first was in 2005 when he briefly courted her before dating Katie Holmes.
“They already have that story, even if it was more of a brief flirtation than a complex romance,” an insider told the publication.
“They had a special time together partying in the Hollywood Hills and having a great time. Sofia wasn’t giving the signs back then that she wanted something long-term, so she broke up in a totally amicable way and they remained friends,” she added.
Apparently said attempt at romance was promoted by the actor Will Smith, who put them in touch, but the plan failed because Sofía Vergara was afraid that Tom would involve her in Scientology while she was Catholic.
In an unauthorized biography of Tom, author Andrew Morton wrote that Sofia was dazzled by the actor and his efforts to win her over, but the relationship did not progress.
“She was dazzled by Tom’s megawatt smile and amused by the storm of phone calls, flowers and chocolates that followed their first meeting,” Morton said.
“I was fundamentally terrified of Scientology. She sincerely believed that God would strike her down and burn in hell if she joined.”
After Sofia, Tom married Katie Holmes and they welcomed their daughter Suri in 2006. For her part, Sofia married Joe Manganiello in 2015; they broke up a few weeks ago, they announced in a joint statement to Page Six.
