Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood’s most commercially successful actors today, has signed a contract with Warner Bros. Discovery. He will develop and produce new films for her as well as entire sagas in which he is to act. The company announced this on Wednesday night.
Sixty-one-year-old Cruise, who became famous for the Top Gun or Mission: Impossible series, will even get an office for himself and his production company at the Warner Bros. headquarters in Burbank, California, similar to where Frank Sinatra or Clint Eastwood used to have it.
The contract is not exclusive, it allows the actor to continue working on the sagas Mission: Impossible or Top Gun for rival Paramount, clarifies Variety.com. But according to him, Warner Bros. Discovery expects Tom Cruise to help them come up with and launch similar big-budget series. David Zaslav, head of Warner Bros. Discovery, signed the agreement with him.
“Concluding a contract with perhaps the biggest movie star in the world is of course a strong signal,” says Paul Dergarabedian of the Comscore analyst company. According to him, Hollywood often works in such a way that when there is one star actor on a project, it is easier to attract others to it.
The Hollywood Reporter emphasizesthat Cruise never signed a similar contract with Paramount either.
In addition to Zaslav, Cruise’s closest collaborators are to be Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who will head the film division of Warner Bros. from 2022. Motion Picture Group.
“From day one, we’ve been trying to get this famous studio back to where it was at the height of its glory,” said De Luca and Pam Abdy in a joint statement, according to which Zaslav told them at the first meeting that he wanted to bring Cruise back to the company. “I have great admiration for David, Pam and Mike, as well as their entire team, and I look forward to making great films together,” adds Tom Cruise.
He worked with Warner Bros. especially in the 90s of the last century on films Interview with a vampire, Magnolia or Eyes Wide Shut. He last acted in their sci-fi On the Edge of Tomorrow from 2014, but since then he had all projects with competitors. Recently, the actor drew attention to himself especially with last year’s sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which took in almost 1.5 billion dollars worldwide, i.e. 33.6 billion crowns, and became his most commercially successful title ever.
Last year, Cruise was the star of another installment of Mission: Impossible Retribution – The First Part, which, however, finished below expectations with about 567.5 million dollars or 12.7 billion crowns.
During his entire career, Tom Cruise acted in films that together grossed almost 13 billion dollars. He was nominated for an Oscar three times, specifically for pictures Born on the 4th of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. But he never succeeded.
Warner Bros. Discovery, like other Hollywood companies, is now waking up from a several-month hibernation caused by last year’s strike by screenwriters and actors. Because of her, Tom Cruise also had to postpone the filming of the next Mission: Impossible. In addition, the actor is now working on a film with director Doug Liman, which he wants to film in space, or on board the International Space Station, in cooperation with the American NASA.
