Imagine you are one of the greatest Hollywood stars of all time. With almost 60 years of age under your belt, you still perform the most spectacular stunts in the film industry yourself without the use of (lousy) special effects from the computer. Your previous film went down in cinema history. And your current action spectacle will be celebrated by the audience and will break the barrier of $500 million Sales volume. And yet you are disappointed.
Tom Cruise disappointed? That’s how successful Mission: Impossible 7 is
When Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 hit the cinemas in July 2023, everything was set for a brilliant blockbuster. After a painful dry spell with flops like DC’s The Flash or Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny, the cinema operators were hoping for a similarly brilliant hit like Top Gun: Maverick. In the Corona-stricken year before, Tom Cruise managed the first billion-dollar hit of his unique Hollywood career with the action spectacle.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Teil 1 Easily conquered number 1 in the worldwide cinema charts. However, the blockbuster started a little weaker than initially assumed. And just a week later he was flattened by a screen duo that has never existed before in Hollywood history.
Barbie and Oppenheimer stormed the cinema charts and attracted millions of cinema fans to cinemas around the world. In particular, the toy film adaptation has since taken the breath away even of proven film experts. Nobody would have seriously thought that Barbie (in such a short time) would break the magic mark of 1 billion US dollars.
Mission: Impossible 7 has been living a shadowy existence in the cinemas since the start of “Barbenheimer”. The new action hit starring Tom Cruise is about to break the mark of $500 million to happen. A success, but not an outstanding result, as a look at the previous parts of the agent series shows:
Mission: Impossible (1996) – $458 millionMission: Impossible 2 (2000) – $446 millionMission: Impossible 3 (2006) – $398 millionMission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) – $695 millionMission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) – $683 millionMission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) – $792 millionMission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Teil 1 (2023) – $495 million

The headlines of this spectacular cinema summer definitely belonged to other films. Disney’s family films made notable catch-ups at the box office. DC’s superhero universe failed miserably. And “Barbenheimer” made sure that cinema is more popular than ever. Only about Tom Cruise spoke after the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Teil 1 nobody anymore.
