TOLEDO.- The Radiodiagnostic Service of the University Hospital Complex of Toledo, dependent on the Castilla-La Mancha Health Service (SESCAM), will lead the international research project for the implantation of a new imaging device for the breast cancer screening by avoiding radiation and compressioncalled MammoWave.

The head of the Radiodiagnostic Service of the Toledo Hospital, dr. cristina romerois the main researcher and scientific reference point of this project, in which 10 European hospitals participate, offering more than 10,000 women the possibility of being evaluated on this new technological device for its validation.

The responsibility will be the Breast Pathology Unit of the Radiology Service design the clinical trial protocol and coordinate the development of this international study. In this sense, last week the European consortium, coordinated by Toscana Life Sciences, met in the Italian city of Siena to establish lines of action.

To carry out this project, Dr. Cristina Romero explained that the University Hospital Complex of Toledo was the only Spanish center selected in 2019 to participate in this trialtogether with hospitals in Italy and Germany, as a national reference center in breast cancer screening and early diagnosis programmes.

Because of this, Since then more than 300 women from the Toledo Health Area have participated in the European research study on the development of a new imaging device for the detection of breast cancer, which avoids both compression of the breast and the use of radiation for the early detection of breast cancer, as reported by the regional government in a press release.

In this sense, and to carry out the project, a new device was installed in the health center and for one year more than 300 patients from the Toledo Health Area were offered the opportunity to participate in it. However, the women included in this project continued with their conventional study belonging to the Castilla-La Mancha government’s breast screening prevention program.

Dr. Romero has indicated that this innovative technique generates images of the breast through the application of microwavessimilar to those of mobile phones, of low power and totally safe. Patients remain lying face down in a completely comfortable position while the test is performed in approximately 10 minutes per breast.

The project manager of the Toledo Hospital points out that “it is of enormous scientific and social importance, since breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in European women, given that one in nine women will suffer from it sooner or later their life”.

SELECTION OF MOTHER

In May 2011, the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Toledo took over the public health program of the selection breast cancer as a first step in integrating the breast cancer process. In it they meet more than 75,000 women between the ages of 45 and 70 in the province of Toledoin order to improve the path that patients diagnosed with breast cancer have to face, given that the center has a Breast Pathology Unit composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals

This has facilitated continuity of care, as all specialists are in agreement breast cancer requires a multidisciplinary approachboth in early diagnosis activities –selection– as in diagnosis and treatment.
