Tokyo’s Minato Ward Introduces Overseas School Trips for Junior High Students

Tokyo’s Minato Ward has decided to make overseas destinations for school trips for all junior high school third-year students from next fiscal year. According to the ward and the Japan School Trip Association, it is the first municipality in Tokyo to conduct overseas school trips among all public schools, and it is rare nationwide. The ward will bear the amount in excess of the student’s self-pay.

The aim is to develop international citizens by having them directly experience different cultures and deepen their international understanding, and to further improve the attractiveness of the ward.

The project cost is 512 million yen, and a related budget proposal will be submitted to the regular ward assembly in September. Next year’s destination is Singapore. It was chosen because it is an English-speaking country with a small time difference and is safe. About 760 third-year students in the municipality are scheduled to spend five days and three nights from June to September next year.

It is said that the student’s burden will be kept within about 70,000 yen, which is the cost in Kyoto, Nara, etc. until this year. A simple calculation shows that the ward burden is about 670,000 yen per person.

Embassies of about 80 countries are gathered in the ward, and foreigners account for about 7% of the population. The ward is focusing on developing international human resources, such as by introducing an “international course” class from the first year of elementary school. Ward Mayor Masaaki Takei said at a regular press conference on the 1st, “We want to make this a culmination of events for children to demonstrate their communication skills in English that they have cultivated.” (Keigo Okumura)
