Tokyo supported by economic optimism in China and the United States

The flagship Nikkei index gained 2.19% to 27,369.43 points, its highest level since April 21. The broader Topix index gained 1.86% to 1,922.44 points.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange closed Monday at its highest in five weeks, driven by the rise of Wall Street on Friday against a backdrop of decelerating US inflation, and by the hopes raised by the easing of health restrictions in China.

The flagship Nikkei index gained 2.19% to 27,369.43 points, its highest level since April 21.

The broader Topix index gained 1.86% to 1,922.44 points.

The New York Stock Exchange concluded its first week of increases in two months on Friday, reassured by an encouraging inflation index in the United States and by consumption figures showing that American households continue to spend.

Investors also looked favorably on the gradual deconfinement in Shanghai and the lifting of some of the restrictions in Beijing, which bodes well for the resumption of activity in the world’s second largest economy.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index climbed 2.1% around 06:50 GMT.

On the side of values

BIG CONTRACT FOR JGC HOLDINGS: the title of the Japanese engineering group JGC Holdings jumped 3.47% to 1,787 yen. The company announced Monday that it has won a contract with oil giant Saudi Aramco to build facilities to separate natural gas from crude oil. The amount was not disclosed but would be around 300 billion yen (2.2 billion euros) according to information from the Nikkei business daily.

On the side of oil and currencies

The oil market was on the rise: around 06:45 GMT, the price of a barrel of American WTI gained 0.76% to 115.95 dollars and that of a barrel of Brent from the North Sea gained 0.46% to 119.98 dollars .

On the foreign exchange market, the yen was stable against the dollar, at the rate of one dollar for 127.09 yen around 06:50 GMT against 127.11 yen on Friday at 21:00 GMT.

The euro rose against the Japanese currency, one euro trading for 136.67 yen against 136.46 yen at the end of last week.

The euro was worth 1.0753 dollars, against 1.0735 dollars on Friday.
