Tokyo Olympics: six medals for Val-de-Marne athletes

Six medals. This is the prize list displayed by the licensed athletes in the municipalities of Val-de-Marne during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, out of the 33 charms won by the French delegation. This is as much as in the previous Rio Games, in 2016.

In Japan, the sportsmen of the department have particularly distinguished themselves in judo, with four medals. Member of the Red Star Club of Champigny-sur-Marne, the five-time world champion Clarisse Agbégnénou finally won the Olympic judo title of -63 kg which had escaped her in Rio in 2016, where she had been a silver medalist. The flag bearer of the French delegation also participated in the French victory in the mixed team event, alongside Axel Clerget, licensed in Sucy Judo.

Amandine Buchard (Red Star Club de Champigny) and Luka Mkheidze (Sucy Judo), also distinguished themselves with respectively a silver medal (-52 kg) and a bronze medal (-60 kg). Luka Mkheidze had also opened the medal counter for France. The department of Val-de-Marne did not fail to recall that the two judokas are in a professional integration agreement with the Departmental Council, in order to prepare for future retraining.

First French gold medal

Romain Cannone was crowned Olympic champion in épée. Licensed at the VGA Saint-Maur, he had surprised, because he was initially not to participate in the individual event. His victory allowed the French delegation to win their first gold medal. Rayan Helal and Sébastien Vigier, the two cyclists from the Union sportive de Créteil, complete this Val-de-Marne record. They won bronze in the team sprint event.

The department of Val-de-Marne will still have the opportunity to shine during the Paralympic Games, which will take place from August 24 to September 5. Marie Patouillet, Antoine Jesel and Nélia Barbosa will compete respectively in para-cycling, para-rowing and paracanoe. The next event will then come, the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, which will not however take place in Val-de-Marne.
