The photo of a Ukrainian woman with the Olympic champion posted on social networks caused public outcry due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea and the armed conflict in the Donbas that has been ongoing since 2014.
“As soon as she returns from Tokyo, I will meet her. Athletes representing Ukraine in international competitions must understand that the prolonged Russian-Ukrainian war brings with it certain limitations and responsibilities,” Deputy Defense Minister Anna Maliar wrote on Facebook.
The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has continued uninterruptedly since 2014 – the Donbas region is the theater of military operations. There, the fights have been taking place since April 2014. A little earlier, Russian troops also occupied the Crimean Peninsula.
