Tokyo 2020 – Our ranking of nations: China regains power, France grapples

Is the sacrosanct table of medals really the table of medals, or that of gold medals? The IOC establishes its ranking according to the number of titles. The silver and bronze medals are in reality only used to decide between countries in the event of a tie in the number of gold medals. Is it better to have two medals, but in gold, or fifteen, but with a single coronation? Question of perspective.

Moreover, the United States and other Anglo-Saxon countries have always read this hierarchy differently. They do a different tally, ranking countries only by the number of medals. This has the merit of offering a more global view of the strength of each delegation, but without attributing added value to a gold medal. Caricaturing, if a country has thirty medals, all in gold, and another thirty medals, all in bronze, they will be classified at the same rank.

Rather than a medal table, whether global or that of gold medals, we have therefore opted for a “Ranking of nations”, by giving a coefficient to each place on the podium:

  • 3 points for a gold medal
  • 2 points for a silver medal
  • 1 point for a bronze medal

In the event of a tie on points, the countries are separated by the number of gold medals, then the total number of medals in the event of a new tie.

This ranking will be updated every evening until the end of the Olympic Games.

The ranking for Monday, August 2

It is a small step on the scale of the Games. But a big one to that of France. Monday, France passed Italy. The day after the legendary day experienced by the Transalpines at the Olympic stadium in Tokyo, the Blues let the storm pass and thanks to Quiquampoix and the French riders, France rose to 6th place in our ranking of nations. Will she be able to go higher? It seems complicated, as Australia has a comfortable lead (+20 points).

At the top, the fight is fierce between China which, in addition to being at the top of the medal table, arrogates to itself that of our ranking of nations. With 137 points on the clock, the Chinese are four short steps ahead of the Americans (and seven more Olympic titles). China is back in front, can it hold out to the end? It will be complicated.
