Czech volleyball players have already settled in Tokyo for good. For Barbora Hermannova it was to be the second Olympic Games in her career, and for her partner the third appearance in the Olympic competition. The ladies were ready to perform in the beach volleyball tournament when it suddenly turned out that Marketa Slukova-Nausch had tested positive for the coronavirus. This is the fifth case of infection in the Czech Olympic team.
On Thursday, July 22, it was decided that Slukova-Nausch and Hermannova would not perform in Tokyo. The coronavirus-infected volleyball player referred to this information, arguing that this type of news is the worst that can happen to an athlete.
– We cried, we cursed, and then we cried again. It really hurts, I don’t know how we’ll handle it. For an athlete it is a real drama, a situation that everyone would like to avoid at all costs – said Slukova-Nausch quoted by CNN TV.
The Czech Prime Minister thunders. “It’s a scandal”
The Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis himself also referred to this situation. The politician cannot believe what happened and has already started looking for those to blame. In his opinion, the chain of coronavirus infections in the Czech team could have been started by one of its doctors, who did not accept the COVID-19 vaccine before his departure to Tokyo.
– It’s a scandal. I don’t understand how this could have happened. We try to convince all people to get vaccinated. And even the doctor of our staff, Vlastimil Voracek, who also had a positive test result, did not get vaccinated. It’s not fair to athletes, said the Czech prime minister, quoted by the Swedish daily Expressen.
It is also known that the remaining four infected in the Czech national team flew to Tokyo on the same plane as the aforementioned team doctor. So it is suspected that he might have been “patient zero”.
