You must have heard about temples for marriage. But have you heard of Divorce Temples? There is such a temple in Japan. With a rich heritage of six centuries, this temple is now known as a symbol of women empowerment in the country. Visitors to Tokeiji Temple are first greeted by a stone-paved path. It leads to the main gate, the Sanmon Gate. This beautiful temple is situated in the midst of cherry tree groves. The influence of Zen style can be seen in the building construction here. The other Sugawaka Tokeiji Temple is located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Province, Japan. This Buddhist temple was founded in 1285 by Buddhist nun Kakusan Shido Ni. In the early days, the purpose of this Buddhist shrine was to give spiritual instructions to women. But later it became famous as a refuge for women in bad marriages.
In Japan at that time, women did not have the right to divorce. Therefore, many women were forced to continue their lives despite suffering various tortures. In the meantime, Tokeiji Temple was born as the need of the times. Tokei Ji became a temple of divorcees in its own right, providing refuge, peace and a way of life for women escaping abusive relationships.
At that time, there was a custom of issuing divorce papers from Tokeiji temple itself. Women who divorced in this way were known as Tsuifuku-ji (tsuifuku-ji) in Japan. The divorce certificate at Tokei Ji Temple also became a release document for women from a bad marriage.
