Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev declared January 10 a day of nationwide mourning for the many casualties during the crackdown on protests. This was announced on Saturday, January 8, by the press secretary of the head of state Berik Uali in Facebook.
“In connection with the numerous human casualties as a result of tragic events in a number of regions of the country, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev decided to declare January 10, 2022 a day of national mourning,” wrote Uali.
He added that the corresponding decree will soon be promulgated.
Recall, on the eve of Tokayev said that gave the order to open fire on the protesters, whom he called “terrorists”, to defeat without warning.
Human rights defenders from Human Rights Watch said the order was illegal and demanded to cancel it.
