“The withdrawal of a contingent of peacekeepers from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (ODIHR) will begin tomorrow,” Tokajev said at an operational headquarters meeting in Almaty.

“I have had talks with the leaders of the countries concerned. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the contingent command for its work over the next few days,” he said.

“The ODKB mission is considered a great success. Once again, I thank my fellow heads of state,” he said.

“The very presence of the ODKB peacekeeping contingent in Kazakhstan, including Almaty, played a major role in stabilizing the situation in our country, and played a major psychological role in repelling the terrorist and bandit attack,” Tokayev said.

Protests against the sharp rise in liquefied gas prices reportedly began on January 2 in Zhanaozen, in the southwest of the country.

In the following days, however, protests took over the whole of Kazakhstan, and political demands began to emerge alongside economic ones. The protesters demanded, among other things, an ex-president Nursultana The complete departure of Nazarbayev and his clan from the leadership of the state.

Tokajev requested the deployment of an ODKB contingent on the evening of January 5, when government forces had effectively lost control of Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city.

2030 ODKB soldiers and 250 technical units arrived in Kazakhstan, Tokajev said.
