The sun rotates in an apparent orbit with respect to the celestial background stars that appear fixed in the sky. This orbit is known as the ecliptic, and the plane of the ecliptic is inclined to the plane of the celestial equator at an angle of 23 degrees and 27 minutes, which is the same angle at which the Earth’s axis of rotation is inclined from the vertical. At the level of its orbit, as a result of the Earth’s rotation around the sun and the tilt of its axis at this angle, the four seasons occur.
