Today, Saturday 24 July, the first eleven gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics will be awarded. The races will begin when in Italy it will be one and a half in the morning with various qualifications and repechage. The first medal final is scheduled at 3.45 am, the last at 2.45 pm.
There will be 45 Italians involved in individual or couple competitions, and three teams: the men’s volleyball, the women’s softball and the women’s 3 × 3 basketball. The Italians in the race can aspire to eight medals.

The most anticipated event is the men’s road cycling race, starting at four. Alberto Bettiol, Damiano Caruso, Giulio Ciccone, Gianni Moscon and Vincenzo Nibali can aspire to a place on the podium. The most popular Italian is Moscon, but he will have to contend with at least three big favorites: the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, winner of the Tour de France for two years, his compatriot Primoz Roglic and the Belgian Wout Van Aert.
In fencing Rossella Fiammingo and Mara Navarria can win a medal in the female sword, Luca Curatoli in the male saber. In the race there will also be Federica Isola, Enrico Berré and Luigi Samele.
Other Italians to follow
The men’s national volleyball team debuts in the group stage of the Olympic tournament at 2 am against Canada. The women’s 3 × 3 basketball team also made its debut, with two matches starting at 10.30, against Mongolia and France. The Italy of softball risks elimination from the groups: at 1 pm they play against the United States. In tennis Fabio Fognini, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti and Sara Errani make their debut, in swimming Gabriele Detti, one of the most popular Italians in the pool.
