“Today, we have more certainties”

France Bleu Normandie: Eddy Costil, when you prepare two young goalkeepers like Sullivan Péan and Garissone Innocent for a match, is it totally different from what you do for an experienced goalkeeper like Rémy Riou?

Eddy Costil : It’s diametrically opposed because these are two boys who – when they started with us – had zero games, very few National 2 and National 3 games for both.

Yes, it is special support. This is already to avoid putting pressure on them, that they play their game, that they be as natural as possible, that we have confidence in them – this is the case – that they do not overplay.

My job upstream is to try to reassure them in training that they will find it beneficial because it is not in a week or two weeks that we will improve them. On the other hand, we can try to put them in the best possible psychological and technical capacities to approach their match.

While Rémy Riou, it’s a little different. He has all his experience. He knows how to manage his matches. He knows how to manage his warm-up while the others need a little more guidance. They need to feel reassured.

FBN: It’s a chance for them. For young people of 20 (Innocent) and 21 years (Péan), sometimes it takes years before being able to play a pro match. However, we know that for a goalkeeper to have one or a few pro games is important

EC : This is essential. We have two guards who are young but have no experience even with the reserve. Garissone must have made two games with the PSG reserve when he arrived and eight games with the U19 and in the Youth League.

Sulli, he’s been with us for three to four years. He had two almost white seasons. Last year he started playing. He’s been in ten-eleven National 3 games. This year he’s been in four or five National 2 games. That’s it. It’s nothing at all.

You throw them. It gives them a lot of experience, but we were going a bit into the unknown. Today we have more certainties and I was able to analyze, observe with the coach obviously – because nothing is done without the approval of the coach obviously in close collaboration. We saw the points to improve and improve whether it be Garisone for Sulli for the next matches that they could possibly have to play. Be as relevant as possible and be better prepared to respond.

FBN: Are Garissone Innocent and Sullivan Péan very different from each other?

EC : Yes, we have three goalkeepers who are very different with different qualities. Sullivan is a goalkeeper who is excellent on his line, who is present, who takes up a lot of space and who never gets under the game. But he lacks a bit of training because he arrived late at home. He was injured a lot in his first two seasons.

He’s a big brave man. He’s an exceptional boy. We are lucky to have three top guys at Stade Malherbe who are hardworking and have an irreproachable state of mind.

But hey, Sulli lacks certain subtleties of the position: tactics, technique but that he compensates enormously and that he also works a lot.

While Garissone has a finer formation but he had a lot less playing benchmark. He played very little at PSG. Both have different qualities but great qualities.
