Despite the superstars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, the thriller “Im Netz der Temptung” (today 8:15 pm on Vox) became a mega-flop. But that’s also because the central twist is so crazy that you can hardly believe it …
After publishing my review of “Im Netz der Temptung” under the title “The Mega-Twist 2019”, I read in a number of comments that the readers had clicked directly on to the Wikipedia entry for the film after reading To find out immediately what the hell this mega-twist is supposed to be, which turns everything upside down after about an hour.
At that time it was also to be understood. The review appeared many weeks before the German theatrical release – and even if anticipation is still the greatest joy, you could understand that the patience was simply not enough. Of course, reading can never replace the moment in the film when the audience inevitably drops your jaws and you ask either angry, disturbed or surprised with joy: “Huh?”
“Surprising” would be a total understatement
But this time, fortunately, far less patience is required: Because “Im Netz der Temptation” is already running this evening at 8:15 pm as a free TV premiere on Vox. So: Resist the temptation of the title and take a look – and if the twist just really annoys you halfway through, then just switch it off immediately afterwards.
But by then you have to see “Im Netz der Temptung” to be believed … because not even the trailer gives you a rough idea of what kind of film this is really about. Instead, you get the feeling that “Im Netz der Temptation” is just a star-studded film noir thriller about the usual mix of murder and jealousy:
But puff cake! You could probably guess all day and still wouldn’t get the answer – and even the synopsis would hardly help you: The former soldier Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) now earns his living as a boat captain on a small, remote island. Financially, however, it looks anything but good.
But then suddenly his ex-wife Karen (Anne Hathaway) shows up with an immoral offer: Baker is supposed to go fishing with her new husband Frank Zariakas (Jason Clarke), a sadistic gangster, to fish – and throw him overboard …
The following twist definitely pulls the rug out from under your feet – but you have to decide for yourself whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. You can find out what we think of it in our detailed film review:
