The disappointment about relegation from the 3rd division is still great at SV Meppen. The home win in the last game of the season against Duisburg 2-1 (1-0) on Saturday was not enough, as the competition from Uerdingen scored points in Mannheim. Now it is time to concentrate on the NFV Cup semi-final against the regional league team VfB Oldenburg. The game will take place on Tuesday (25 May 2021, 5 p.m.) in the Marschweg Stadium in Oldenburg without a spectator.
The SVM reached the semi-finals with a 3-0 win at SV Atlas Delmenhorst on March 30th. Oldenburg celebrated a happy 4-3 victory over SSV Jeddeloh. After just over an hour, VfB looked like the sure winner – already leading 3-0.
Due to the corona pandemic, the Oldenburg team was only able to play one competitive game and two test games in the past few months. The last league game took place at the end of October last year.
The decision in the first semi-final was only made after a penalty shoot-out. SV Drochtersen / Assel prevailed 4-2 at VfV Borussia 06 Hildesheim. The cup final will take place next Saturday (May 29, 2021) at 3 p.m. in Hanover. The winner of the competition competes in the financially lucrative first round of the DFB Cup. The SVM was last represented there in 2015.
“Of course they’ll be sad in Meppen, but the guys are professionals. I’m sure relegation won’t have much of an impact on the game. When the kick-off starts, everyone wants to win. It’s about a title and of course also about a bonus ”, Oldenburg coach Dario Fossi is quoted on the club’s homepage.
SVM head coach Rico Schmitt after the final training session on Tuesday morning: “We did not achieve relegation, the top goal of the season. The maximum goal would have been to stay in the 3rd division and win the national cup. Now the minimum goal remains cup success. It’s about the future of SVM, it’s about the fans. Today the difficult hurdle Oldenburg has to be overcome. VfB is fresh and excited about the game. But we are professionals. The semifinals must be contested with the utmost concentration. We have to deliver! “
