Tesla will hold an event today to celebrate the long-awaited start of deliveries of the futuristic Cybertruck electric pickup truck. Today at 23:00 Moscow time, the first buyers will receive the keys to the new pickup trucks in a ceremonial ceremony from the hands of Tesla founder Elon Musk himself. However, the announcement of specifications, prices and other details is expected.
Tesla Cybertruck was presented back in November 2019 and it was planned that it would go on sale in 2021, but as often happens with Elon Musk’s ambitious projects, the pickup truck’s release was repeatedly postponed. Musk himself explained the delays “insanely complex» problems of development and production. At the same time, the businessman called the pickup “potentially our best product ever».
Cybertruck became famous at the time of its presentation four years ago. And not only with its very unusual futuristic design, but also with force majeure at the presentation: Musk talked about the “armored” glass of the car, but immediately after that it broke from an iron ball thrown at it.
A distinctive feature of the Cybertruck should be its stainless steel body. According to Musk, the steel is dent-resistant, paint-free, and “literally bulletproof.” It was previously reported that the Cybertruck will have a payload capacity of 3,500 pounds (about 1,588 kg) and a luggage compartment volume of 100 cubic feet (about 2,832 liters). The car can accommodate six adults, the company says. The driver will be able to raise or lower the suspension by 4 inches (10.16 cm), Tesla says. And on the inside, the Cybertruck will offer a spacious interior with a large 17-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard.
Tesla four years ago announced three versions of the car, priced from $39,000 to $69,000. According to Musk, the cheapest version will have a range of 250 miles (402 km), and the most expensive will have a range of 500 miles (804 km). However, these prices no longer appear on Tesla’s website, which clearly hints at their changes. However, Tesla previously said that more than 1 million people have pre-ordered the Cybertruck.
Tesla will announce the delivery of the first batch of Cybertruck this evening at an event at its large plant in Austin, Texas. The company plans to present only 10 pickup trucks at the event.
Why so few? Elon Musk himself told investors last month that Tesla is facing “enormous difficulties» while ramping up Cybertruck production. He even admits that the company “dug its own grave” by deciding to develop this pickup truck. Musk cited the Cybertruck’s advanced features as a key reason for the delay. “Prototyping is easy, said Musk. — Manufacturing is hard” Yesterday we wrote in detail about the problems Tesla faced when transitioning to Cybertruck production.
Throughout the next year, Tesla will increase production of pickup trucks. At first, the Tesla plant in Texas will be able to produce no more than 125,000 Cybertruck electric pickups per year, and this volume will only be able to double in 2025 under favorable circumstances. “It is necessary to invent not only a car, but also a method of producing it.”,” Musk once noted. If, when releasing Model 3 and Model Y, the company sought to simplify the design of electric vehicles as much as possible, then in the case of Model X and Cybertruck, many solutions had to be implemented by trial and error, since there was simply nowhere to borrow ready-made ones.
