If a film produced for 75 million dollars makes more than half a billion, a sequel is a done deal in 99 percent of cases. But nothing has changed with this 2007 hit. Today you can see it on free TV.
Since “The Simpsons Movie” hit the big screens in 2007 and was a worldwide success, every few years we have been reporting new assurances from the studio and the makers of the animated series “The Simpsons”, which has now been running for a sensational 35 seasons on TV, that they will finally release a second movie. While these promises seem to be quite serious, nothing has happened to date. So we are forced to continue watching our yellow favorites exclusively on the much smaller screen. Like today at prime time…
“The Simpsons Movie” airs today, August 8, 2024 at 8:15 p.m. on ProSieben MAXX. There will be a repeat the same night at 2.45 a.m. Alternatively, you can watch the FSK-6 title at any time as part of the flat rate subscription from Disney+* stream. It is also available on Blu-ray, DVD and paid Video-on-Demand* to have:
The film was directed by David Silverman (“The Fumble”), who had already directed numerous popular episodes of the series. In the English-language original version, voice actors known from TV such as Dan Castellaneta (including Homer Simpson), Julie Kavner (including Marge Simpson), Nancy Cartwright (including Bart Simpson), Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson), Hank Azaria (including Moe Szyslak), Pamela Hayden (including Milhouse Van Houten) and Harry Shearer (including Mr. Burns) took on their usual speaking roles. There were also prominent guest stars such as Tom Hanks and the members of the punk rock band Green Day, who lent their voices to their drawn alter egos.
In the German dubbing, too, wherever possible, speakers were used that fans know from television.
This is what “The Simpsons Movie” is about
Springfield, the Simpson family’s hometown, is threatened by an ecological catastrophe. Of course, Homer (German voice: Norbert Gastell) is not entirely innocent. He disposed of the excrement that his new pet pig had collected over the course of weeks in the already completely polluted local lake. This dumping was the last straw, so to speak, and Springfield is now officially the dirtiest city in all of America.
President Arnold Schwarzenegger (Johannes Scherer) is forced to act in the face of this fact. His solution: a huge glass dome is placed over Springfield so that no one can get in or out. It’s no wonder that his neighbors want to get their hands on Homer. The Simpsons therefore have no choice but to escape, which they manage by means of a rabbit hole.
So Homer, his wife Marge (Anke Engelke) and the children (Sandra Schwittau, Sabine Bohlmann) start a new beginning in Alaska. But when they hear that the government wants to completely wipe out Springfield to solve the problem, Marge and the kids want to go back to save their old friends. Only Homer still needs to be convinced. Because he’s starting to like it at the end of the world quite a bit…
When is “The Simpsons 2” finally coming out?
It’s not easy to explain why there is still no second movie with Homer, Marge & Co. Every studio wants to make money and it seems hard to imagine a safer investment than producing a new “The Simpsons” adventure for cinemas around the world. And yet there is still not even a vague date for a sequel.
A script has been in the works since 2014, but more intensively since 2019 at the latest, when the Disney Group took over “The Simpsons” studio 20th Century Fox, as producer and screenwriter Al Jean confirmed in several interviews. However, the series’ bosses – including creator Matt Groening, showrunner Mike Scully, Albert Brooks and Jean himself – seem to fear that working on another movie could severely hinder the “workflow” of episode production.
The same staff worked on the 2007 film as on the series – which was obviously very stressful for everyone involved. Jean recalled that many fans – and not without reason, in his opinion – complained that the series had clearly lost some of its class in the years that the film was being made. After the film was finished and released, the quality of the episodes improved significantly. According to Jean, they did not want to risk such a scenario again – which is why the makers are taking their time with another film. So whether and when we will see “The Simpsons 2” is completely up in the air.
Have you already taken a look at the recently released comeback season of “Futurama”? It’s another, equally great series from “The Simpsons” mastermind Matt Groening.
