Thanks to his performance as the title character in Luc Besson’s thriller masterpiece “Léon: The Professional”, action fans love Jean Reno as a tough guy with a heart. However, fans of the gigantic Frenchman will have to imagine the latter for the most part in the tough “Antigang: In the Shadow of Crime”. The problem with the primetime date is that Tele 5 is only allowed to show the FSK-16 action film in an edited version. In total, you will miss out on over three and a half minutes of brutal violence, such as Schnittberichte.com Anyone who wants to see this will have to get Blu-ray, DVD or video on demand to experience the spectacle “uncut”. It’s definitely worth it for anyone who can stomach it. Director Benjamin Rocher (“The Horde”) and cameraman Jean-François Hensgens (“In A Dark Place”) have captured the various fights and shootings, as well as the interrogations of the cops, which sometimes border on torture, in a truly shockingly authentic way.

“Antigang”: This is the story
Serge Buren (Reno) has a legendary reputation as a police officer. His colleagues admire him and the Paris underworld fears the investigator like no other. In order to achieve results, the veteran and his team do not shy away from unconventional (i.e. illegal) methods. Thanks to his incredible success rate, Buren’s bosses are not bothered at all by the fact that his special unit goes out with baseball bats when fighting criminal gangs and otherwise sees rules or laws as suggestions at best that can safely be ignored.
However, when Buren’s old rival Becker (Thierry Neuvic) becomes the new commander of the precinct, the tables turn. He demands that all regulations be followed and is not prepared to make any exceptions for the anti-gang troops. If his orders are disregarded – Becker immediately makes this clear! – he wants to disband the unit and hold Buren personally responsible. However, Buren has no intention of suddenly changing his approach. Especially not now that a ruthless and brutal criminal gang with heavy weapons is terrorizing the city…
“Antigang” is the remake of a remake!
In addition to “The Crimson Rivers” star Jean Reno and Thierry Neuvic (“Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows”), “Antigang” also features a few other capable stars. We have the Italian Bond girl Caterina Murino from “Casino Royale”, Alban Lenoir (“The Wages of Fear”), Stéfi Celma (“Call My Agent”) and the Dane Jakob Cedergren from the great “The Guilty”.
In 2015, they all appeared together in front of the camera for the French-language remake of the British crime thriller “The Crime”, which had been released three years earlier. Cockney legend Ray Winstone (“Sexy Beast”) played the role of Reno. Incidentally, the Brit film itself was already a remake – namely of the cult 1970s TV series “The Foxes”.
“The Crime” bei Amazon*
“Antigang” director Benjamin Rocher cleverly transfers the typically British thriller from London to Paris by giving both the scenario and the characters in it their own identities. And he does this without completely deviating from the original. It is certainly interesting to compare the two films directly with each other. So if you liked “Antigang”, you should also watch “The Crime”. The author of these lines slightly prefers the French version – not least because of Jean Reno. But perhaps you will come to a different conclusion.
