The big animated movies are usually released first in cinemas and then on streaming providers. Due to the corona pandemic, things went differently for this film.
The corona epidemic was not so long ago and yet it seems that time has gone by. Cinemas were closed for months in 2021 and caution was required around the world when interacting with each other. This is how it happened that one of the most beautiful Disney films in recent years, strangely enough, celebrated its official cinema release in Germany after the official start of streaming. We are talking about it “Raya and the last dragon“that you have today Pentecost Sunday, May 19, 2024 for the first time on TV for free see The animated film for the whole family will be at Saturday 1 at 8:15 p.m presented.
That’s what it’s about: In the magical world of Kumandra, dragons once brought human life to earth. However, when evil shadows called Druun turned not only humans but also dragons to stone, only the water dragon Sisu could prevent something worse. One day, the young Princess Raya sees how the dragon’s magic jewel broke and brought the five kingdoms, Heart, Tooth, Crest, Claw and Tail into chaos. For years she has been searching for the last remaining dragon, hoping to stop the Druun once and for all and save her family, who were turned to stone.
That’s why no one was interested in the theatrical release of the amazing animated film
The cinema years 2020 and 2021 were hit by the corona pandemic. While many blockbusters were canceled for a year, Disney decided on a different model that also affected “Raya and the Last Dragon”. For the theatrical release originally planned for March 5, 2021, the new animated film was made available for a one-time fee through VIP access to the streaming service Disney +, which has since been discontinued. On June 4, 2021, the film was made available to all Disney+ subscribers at no additional cost; it was only three weeks later, on June 28, 2021, that cinemas reopened and “Raya and the Last Dragon” marked a delayed theatrical release. However, the animated film lost completely there – in Germany it only attracted a little more than 50,000 people to the cinemas.
The reason was the ongoing pandemic: many families continued to be careful or saw the film either in March 2021 thanks to VIP access or at least at the beginning of regular streaming on Disney +, which happened at least before the official cinema release. “Raya and the Last Dragon” not only boasts charming characters, funny lines and great action sequences, but also offers typical Disney magic in every second. Because of the themes it covers of years of isolation and later understanding of nations, “Raya and the Last Dragon” became a hopeful family film in this tumultuous year. Today, thanks to Sat.1, you will once again have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful family film at its free TV premiere.
