Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Diario La Tribuna

On the occasion of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Office in Honduras of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights calls on the three powers of the State, political parties, economic and social actors, civil society organizations, and all the inhabitants of the country, to make the precepts of this transformative instrument a reality through the consolidation of the rule of law and the construction of a more just and equitable society.

Today marks 75 years since the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration by the United Nations General Assembly, after the horrors experienced by humanity during two world wars and the painful legacy of colonialism. Its issuance has allowed the establishment of a system, including our Office, that fights to maintain in force those principles of dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity for all human beings, as the foundation of peace and justice, which were expressed in 1948.

The challenges and dangers that humanity faces today, wars, climate change crises and authoritarian regressions, remind us that compliance with this international standard is more important today than ever. Human rights must be at the center of the actions of States, but they must also be respected by all political, economic and social actors.

Honduras, a founding member of the United Nations Organization in June 1945 and currently a member of the Human Rights Council, also faces its own challenges, among others: poverty, violence, political disagreements in the face of a new multiparty reality, conflicts over land and territories, environmental degradation and climate vulnerability, increase in attacks against human rights defenders, including farmers, environmentalists, indigenous and Afro-Honduran peoples, corruption, homicides against women and increase in migratory movements. These are challenges of such magnitude that they can only be faced with the collaboration of all sectors in the country and inspired by the Universal Declaration and all the human rights regulations that have been derived from it.

May this celebration serve to maintain hope for a country where social justice prevails and the values ​​of the Universal Declaration become a reality.
