Today is the Transfiguration of the Lord according to the new style, and according to the old style it is celebrated on August 19.
The Feast of the Transfiguration existed as early as the 4th century. According to the Gospel text, the Transfiguration event took place in February, 40 days before Easter, but the Orthodox Church moved the celebration to August so as not to fall during Lent. In addition, on the 40th day after the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Lord is always celebrated.
The Transfiguration of the Lord, described in the Gospel, is a mysterious manifestation of the Divine majesty and glory of Jesus Christ before three closest disciples during prayer on Mount Tabor. This event is reported by all the evangelists except John.
Six days later, the Lord, accompanied by his disciples, set out from Caesarea for the borders of Galilee. Stopping at Mount Tabor, He took with Himself three disciples – Peter and the brothers James and John – and went up with them to the top to pray.
During prayer, the Savior “was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as light” (Matthew 17:2). At the same time, two Old Testament prophets appeared – Moses and Elijah – who talked to Jesus “about His exodus, which He was about to do in Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). Waking up from a dream, the apostles see Him in bright clothes with a bright light emanating from Him, conversing with two men.
Traditions and customs of the holiday
On this day, engagements are traditionally arranged and weddings are planned for the fall. It is believed that on this day the “transformation” of the weather begins – it is already moving towards winter, the day begins to decrease, and the sea becomes more turbulent.
According to tradition, the holiday coincides with the Lent of the Mother of God, but on this day the consumption of fish is allowed.
