/View.info/ Annunciation is one of the great spring holidays. It is part of the Easter holiday cycle and is always celebrated on March 25.
Annunciation is a holiday for all Christians, regardless of the tradition and the church to which they belong. According to the Bible, on this day the Archangel Gabriel brought the Virgin Mary the good news that she would give birth to the Savior of mankind, the son of God Jesus Christ. In folk imagination, this day is associated with the arrival of migratory birds and the final spring awakening of nature.
According to folk beliefs, after the Annunciation, everyone tries to leave home full and with money in his pocket, so that if the cuckoo crows, he will be full and with money throughout the year. It is believed that if someone first sees a stork that is not flying, but lying or walking, bad luck will befall him. If a girl or a boy sees a swallow first, she ties an empty cloth three times, puts it on the roof and after three days guesses from it which one she will get.
On this day, activities are carried out with an encouraging meaning, which they attribute to the holiday. They sow vegetables and graft fruit trees to be “gentle”, “scare” fruit trees that do not bear fruit, mark lambs and kids because it is believed that it will hurt them less. Beekeepers open the hives and release the bees to collect sweet honey. They pierce the ears of little girls to put earrings on them. It is believed that on the Annunciation even the strongest poison loses its power.
According to the belief, the elves and fairies come out on this day. Snakes and lizards “wake up and come out of their holes”. In this connection, a number of ritual actions are performed, which, according to folk beliefs, have a protective and repulsive power. Before sunrise they light a fire in one or three places or in all corners of the yard and put cow dung to smoke and drive away the reptiles.
Children and adults hit tins and bells and run around the yard and the house. These actions are accompanied by the utterance of a special verbal formula: “Run, snakes and lizards, today is Blagovets” or “Run, snakes, Blagovets will trap you”, etc. under. Jumping over the fire, the boys rub their feet lightly so that snakes don’t bite them in the summer. Again, for protection, women don’t sew “so that the snakes don’t pierce them”, they don’t knead bread, “because a snake will curl up on it”.
Fish (baked or boiled), patterned pita, onions are present at the ritual table. Names of this day are Blagovest, Blagovesta, Blagoi, Blaga, Evangelina, Bangel.
On the occasion of the Annunciation, His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Neophyte will preside over the Holy Liturgy in the ancient capital church “St. Sophia – Wisdom of God”.
