Today is Earth Day in many countries

The idea was proposed by John McConnell in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco. Earth Day was first celebrated on March 21, 1970, which is the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. American university student Denis Hayes started a movement to protect the Earth on the 22nd and founded the Earth Day Network. Since then, he has become a researcher and expert in alternative energy sources. When he started his movement, more than 25 million Americans stood behind him, and today the movement he initiated covers almost the entire Earth. More than a thousand organizations participate in it. The next significant event was the establishment of the Earth Day International News Center in California in 1989, from then on a monthly newsletter was sent to every country in the world to celebrate Earth Day on April 22 around the world with a variety of actions – readable on Wikipedia. Earth Day is now celebrated in 175 countries, and it has been held in Hungary since 1990. One of the slogans of the Earth Day movement is: “Who said you can’t change the world?”

István Tisza was born on this day

Even in 1861. From 1877, he completed his legal studies at the universities of Berlin, Heidelberg and Budapest. In 1897, the king elevated him to the rank of count. During this time, he also published scientific papers on economic, public law and financial topics. In February 1910, after the fall of the coalition government, he founded a new governing party called the National Labor Party. In the 1910 elections, his party won a big victory, and he won a representative mandate. In May 1912, he assumed the position of president of the House of Representatives, and in 1913 he was appointed prime minister for the second time. In October 1918, four armed men dressed in military uniforms broke into his villa on Hermina Street in the early evening and shot him during an argument.

Sissi’s youngest daughter was born 156 years ago

Mária Valéria, Ferenc József and Sissi’s youngest daughter, was born on April 22, 1868 in Buda. He was brought up in a Hungarian-national spirit, and from 1883 he studied German language, history and literature in Vienna. Like his mother, he also wrote several lyrical poems, which were published in a small volume of poems in 1884.

One of our Nobel laureates was also born in April

Róbert Bárány, the Nobel Prize-winning Swedish doctor of Hungarian origin, was also born on this day in 1876. He earned a medical degree in Vienna and also worked in a military hospital. After that, he was a Russian prisoner of war, then he was released with the help of the Red Cross in 1916, and this year he was able to receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to him in 1915. He earned the recognition for his work on the physiology and pathology of the balance organ in the inner ear.

One of the fathers of the atomic bomb was born 120 years ago

American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was also born on this day in 1904. As scientific director of the Manhattan Project, he played a significant role in the development of the first American atomic bomb. After the deployment of the atomic bomb and the publication of the existence and development history of the weapon, the press began to refer to him as the “father of the atomic bomb”.

Famous Hungarian athletes were also born on this day

Boglárka Telegdy-Kapás, Olympic bronze medalist and world champion swimmer, for example, 31 years ago. Since then, he has become a seven-time European champion, a short-track European champion, and a two-time Youth Olympic champion. Football player Zoltán Gera was born 45 years ago on this day.
