Today in Rhein-Main: Almost like in Berlin

In the meantime, nothing worked: This Wednesday, there were massive disruptions at Frankfurt Airport. Bild: Lando Hass

In the meantime nothing worked, the chaos was perfect: Frankfurt Airport was literally paralyzed for about three hours. And because of a warning strike, this will be repeated on Friday. The FAZ Hauptwache takes a look at the topic of the day.

Good evening,
the worst that can happen to Frankfurt happened on Wednesday: “A chaos, almost like in Berlin,” someone grumbled at the airport, and everyone knows that you can’t compare the orderly life in the Main metropolis with the chaos in the capital. On Wednesday, however, Frankfurt did in fact show a weakness, because the chaos at the airport was really perfect after an excavator cut a fiber optic cable on the construction site for the tracks of S-Bahn line 6 in the north of the city, causing Lufthansa’s IT to crash . Even an airline is helpless without IT, and that’s what it looked like at the airport for three hours. For a while, planes approaching Frankfurt had to be diverted to Cologne, which is something you wouldn’t wish on anyone. Things got better later. Of course, everyone immediately thought of a hacker attack on Lufthansa, but they Deutsche Bahn had to admit contritely that it was an unwilling excavator attack. The aviation industry and DB management had only promised on Monday that they want to work together even more than before.

Luckily it’s working again now because Frankfurt and all of Hesse need the airport. Last but not least, so that the tourists come back. The figures for 2022 were published on Wednesday. After that, the number of guests in this federal state in 2022 was only 20 percent below the pre-crisis value of 2019, in between the slump was bad. One may well hope that if not this year, then next year the value of 2019 will be reached again. There would be a sigh of relief through hotels, guesthouses and restaurants.

But nobody comes on Friday. Because unfortunately we have to talk about the airport again: On Friday it will probably be almost completely paralyzed due to several warning strikes. Among other things, employees of the ground handling services will not go about their work sitting at a control point. If only the excavator had done all the work on Friday … but you just can’t wish for that.

And also will be on Friday too Strikes on subways and trams in Frankfurt +++ is there a new animated film about life Anne Franks, intended primarily to appeal to a younger audience +++ closes in Frankfurt last Linda shoe salon.

I wish you a pleasant evening

Yours, Manfred Koehler
