Today 40 years ago: PSV shows interest in youth player Van Basten by letter

Kees Ploegsma, PSV’s secretary, invites Van Basten to a test match in the letter: “In order to be able to assess your football capacities more easily. We will reimburse any travel expenses.”

A few weeks after PSV’s letter, Van Basten signed a youth contract with Ajax. That was a handwritten contract, which may indicate that the team from Amsterdam was in a hurry to capture the talented attacker.

In 1982 Van Basten makes his debut for Ajax

Less than a year later – on April 3, 1982 – Van Basten already made his debut in Ajax’s first. He fell against NEC for Johan Cruijff and immediately scored.
