Salzburg is in I’m staying. This is what happens on the streets cut up by the Salzach State capital with its city mountains for decades. Johannes GfrererManaging Director of SAlzburg transport association (SVV), describes the situation expressed in numbers as follows:
“We have 60,000 commuters in the city every day, 60,000 internal commuters and 15,000 commuters who commute mainly by car – and on top of that there is leisure and tourist traffic.” Public transport is also currently stuck in traffic jams.
250,000 voters
This Sunday, around 250,000 people in the city of Salzburg and the neighboring regions of Flachau and Tennengau can decide in a referendum on an infrastructure project worth billions that is intended to solve traffic problems.
At least that’s what they predict Advocater of the “S-Link”, which is part of the so-called traffic concept “Chance of the century” see.
The project is around 17 kilometers longpartly underground Extension of the Salzburg local railway from Salzburg Central stationcrossing under the old town and Salzach, until after Hallein.
For the Opponentwhich, like the supporters, have been drumming loudly in recent weeks, the S-Link, on the other hand, is a potential one „Milliardengrab“.
The planned route
At the political level, No-camp only the SPÖ in the country and the city, which has recently been… red mayor Bernhard Auinger is governed.
For the city boss it’s not just that Relief potential the railway controversial. He fears that the construction will restrict the city’s financial scope for many years – especially since it is not yet clear how country and city would share their share of the construction costs.
Pushing for a cost cap
In the event of a “yes” vote on Sunday, Auinger wants to reach a cost cap for the city – as was the case in Linz with the S-Bahn project there.
The costs will increase up to 2.2 billion euros appreciated. “We have the chance to have 50 percent of the costs financed by the federal government. If we don’t take action, the money will be gone,” emphasized State Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP).
Apart from the cost distribution between city and country much more is unclear. This is what the S-Link has been for its entire length to date just a route recommendation before. Ready planned and approved is currently only the underground section from the main train station to Mirabellplatz.
Voting takes place not just via the S-Link alone, but via one “Salzburg mobility solution”which envisages two further branches of the route in Salzburg, for which there are no concrete plans yet. The Voting results are due on Sunday evening present.
