Tobacconist found dead at home in Jesolo, the hypothesis of murder: “He had marks on his neck”

The death of a man in his early sixties is shrouded in mystery. Roberto Basso, found body this morning in a warehouse near his home, in the Jesolo Paese area, the city part of the famous Venetian seaside resort. The carabinieri from the Venice investigative unit and the San Donà di Piave company arrived on site, alerted by the family members, with the deputy prosecutor on duty, Giovanni Zorzi. No one has said anything about the causes of death, but the most serious hypothesis, that of a crime, has not been ruled out. The manner in which the body was found and its conditions can also be traced back to a violent death.

The marks on his neck

Basso, 64 years old and unmarried, was the owner of a tobacconist in the Lido di Jesolo area, and had an economic share in a hotel together with a brother. He had recently lost his mother, who lived with him, and therefore he was alone in his home, a small villa isolated from other residential buildings in the area. His death greatly affected the neighbors, who went to his house in the afternoon, as well as relatives who also lived in the area, including cousins. The medical examiner went to the site for the first inspection and from the reconnaissance an element emerged that could lead to the more serious hypothesis: some signs were found on Basso’s neck, which could also suggest strangulation, as well as to head trauma due to falling to the ground. This is a first element to be supported by the autopsy, which will certainly be ordered by prosecutor Zorzi, who coordinates the investigations. For now, however, all leads are open, including that of a domestic accident that could have caused the neck injuries.
